How to find out your skin type
Our skin is the largest organ of the integumentary system that we have. It consists of seven layers and acts as a protecting shield taking care of the body from the heat, injuries, light, infections, etc. Have you ever come across purchasing a good skincare product and ended up with no results or making your skin worse? Well, it might be then due to the wrong skin type.
All skincare products available in the market are not suited for your skin. Therefore it is important to find out your skin type so that you can get the most suitable skincare products.
Is it necessary to know about my skin type?
Yes, it is. It is critical to understand your skin type to receive the most benefits from the products you use. Skin irritations, skin dryness, breakouts, excess oil, wrinkles, and fine lines can all result from an incorrect skin type diagnosis.
A simple tip to identify your skin type
Step 01 – Deeply cleanse your face with a soft cleanser to remove all makeup, oil, dirt, and impurities.
Step 02- Dry your face with a soft towel and leave your skin free. Leave the skin clean and without any moisturizers or serums.
Step 03-Wait for 1 hour and look closely and find the type of your skin [ Do not touch your face during these 01 hours]
Generally, our skin types can fall into different age categories. Teenagers and early 20’s skin type is more into oily. The Mid 20’s and early 30s normally have a combination skin type where the T-Zone is oily and dry or normal in jawlines and cheeks. The mid 30’s and older tend to have dry skin as the skin started losing the ability to produce oil and retain moisture as we age.
Skin Type | A bit about the skin type | Causes | How to avoid |
---|---|---|---|
Dry Skin | Occurred as a result of lack of oil production in the skin. | Hormone imbalance, genetically prone to produce less oil [ or sebum], Dry Climate, Hot showers/baths, heaters during cold weather. | Make use of alcoholic and sulfate-based products. When showering or bathing, avoid using extremely hot water. If you have a heater or live in a dry area, use a humidifier in your house or bedroom. |
Oily Skin | Your skin appears shiny, or you will notice a lot of oil on your face, neck, shoulders, and back. This causes a lot of blackheads/whiteheads, pimples, and pores to seem larger or become clogged easily. | As a result of genetics, the skin’s sebaceous glands will create excessive oil. Hormones, humid conditions, and over-drying skin can all cause the skin to create more oil. | Use oil-based cleansers, moisturizers, and makeups. Also, look for alcohol and sulfate-free products to avoid your skin getting dry out which can cause regeneration of more oil. |
Combination Skin | Skin is oily, especially the T-zone area, and dry or normal on cheeks and jawlines. | Oil overproduction in the T-zone area. Existing products that you are currently using may be causing skin imbalance. | Use items that promote skin balance. Avoid using products containing alcohol, which can be overly drying for the skin. You don’t want to treat your face with any oil-control or ultra-hydration treatments. As a result, use separate products for the T-zone and dry areas. |
Normal Skin | The skin tone is even. Skin is quite even, with little or no oil, dryness, or breakouts that fade rapidly. | Genes | Normal skin is the first and fast skin type that shows signs of aging. Therefore it is recommended to use anti-aging hydrating skin products to protect your skin. |
Sensitive Skin | If your skin becomes easily irritated, inflamed, itchy, dry, or turns red, you have sensitive skin. Your skin most likely reacts to new products, flushes easily with heat, burns easily in the sun, and has irritating razor bumps when shaving. | Genetics and hormons fluctuations, weather and climate conditions, Products that use | Avoid items that include a lot of synthetic fragrance, heavy dyes, or harsh chemicals. Also, stay away from products that include substances that could aggravate any sensitivities or irritations. |
Tip : Before applying any new product to your body, always do a 24-hour patch test. Keep continuing this as a practice to avoid any negative consequences.
